Characteristics of Neo classical novels are:

The novel started with travelogues the story relating the adventures of traveler’s voyages in unknown and uncharted seas.

The earliest of them is Daniel Defoe’s Robinson crusoe ; and swifts Gulliver’s travels

The word picaresque was comes from the Spanish word “picaro” meaning a rouge or a villain.

The next picaresque novel in which hero is rouge or a bad character who wanders from place to place encounters many adversaries. Who are equally roguish e.g. the heroine of Defoe’s moll Flanders.

“the picaresque novel is the tale of the hardworking travelling hero, suffering from good or bad and enduring them all”

The epistolary novels comes next in which plot develops and comes to an end through the medium of letters ,i.e., Richardson’s Pamela

Samuel Richardson was born on August, 19, 1689 and died on July,4,1761 at the age of 71.He was an 18th century English writer and painter .He is best known for his three epistolary novels(1) Pamela; or virtue

Charles Grandison

Richardson was an established painter and publisher for most of his life and printed almost 500 different works, including journals and magazines. While his print shop slowly run down, at the age of 51 he wrote his first novel and immediately became one of the most popular and admire writer of his time. In 1739 Richardson was asked by his friends Charles Rivington and John Osborn to write ‘ A little volume of latter in comman style, on such subject as might be use of to those country readers, who were unable to incite for themselves’ while writing this volume Richardson was inspired to write his first novel : Pamela

In 1748 his novel Clarissa was published and soon considered as Richardson’s “Master piece”, his great work was rapidly translated into ‘French’ and ‘German’ language also.

Henry Fielding:

Henry Fielding was born on April, 22, 1707 and died on October,8 1754 at the age of 47. His pen name is ‘captain Hercules vinegar’ his most of works are published in Enlightenment age and in Augustan age. Henry fielding mostly known as English novelist and dramatist and his earthly humor and satirical power and as the author of novel Tom Johns .He was educated at Eton college, where he established lifelong friendship with William Pitt the elder. Due to lack of money he starts writing for theatre, some of his work being savagely critical of the contemporary govt. under Prime Minister “Sir Robert Walpole”

Tobias Smollett:

Tobias Smollett was born on March, 19, 1727 at Dalquhurm, now part of Renton, in present day West Dunbartonshir, Scotland and died on September 1771 at the age of 50.He was the fourth son of Achibald Smollett. He was educated at university of Glasgow where he qualified as a surgeon : it has been asserted by some biographer that he then proceeded to the university of Edinburgh but left without taking degree. His occupation is mainly as poet author and as a surgeon. Genera of his work are mostly picaresque and satire. He was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novel, such as The adventure of Rederick Random(1748) and The adventure of Peregrine Pickle(1751), which influenced later novelists like Charles Dickens, George Orwell. In Jamaica he settled down for several years. On his return, he set up practice in ’Downing street’ and married a flush Jamaican heiress, Anne ‘Nancy’ Lasscelles in 1741.

His first publication work was a poem about the Battle of Bulloden entitled “the tears of Scotland”. But it was the Adventure of Rioderick Random” which made his name. his poetry was describe as ‘Delicate ,sweet and mursas a streem”. He travelled to France , where he obtained material for his second novel,” The adventure of Peregrine pickle”, another big achievement for him. After that his another book published is a “The Adventure of Ferdinand Count Fathom” in 1753, now he was recognize as a leading literary figure ,and associated with the like of David Garrick, Laurence Sterene , Oliver Goldsmith and Samuel Johnson.

In 1755 he published translation of Miguel-de-Cervantes’s Don Quixote. Smollett than begun what he regarded as his major work’ A complete history of England’ [1757-1765]

He was buried in the ‘Old English cemetery’ in Livoro,Italy.

Laurence Sterne:

Laurence Sterne was born on November, 24, 1731(Ireland) and died on March, 18, 1768 (London, England) at the age of 54. He was an Anglo-Irish novelist and an Anglican clergyman. He is best known for his novels like” The life and journey and opinion of Tristram Shandy , Gentleman and ‘A Sentimental Journey through France to Italy’. He was involved in local politics.

Sterne was ordinate as a deacon in March 1731 and as priest in August 1738, shortly thereafter Sterne was awarded in vicar ship living of Sutton-on-the forest in Yorkshire.

Serene was at work on his celebrated comic novel during the year that his mother died, his wife seriously ill ,and his daughter was taken ill with fever. An initial sharply satiric version was rejected by Robert Dodsley, the London printer, just when Sterene’s personal life was upset. The publication of Tristam Shendy made Sterne famous in London and on the continent. Sterne continued to struggle with his illness and departed England for France in-1762. His second novel sentimental journey through France to Italy and Tristam Shendy Made him famous not only in England but in whole Europe. His work had also noticeable influence over Brazilian author Machado-de-Assis.

Goethe praised Serene as ‘The most beautiful spirit that ever lived’
